The correct coating method depends on mesh count, emulsion solids, scoop coater edge, artwork, ink deposit, and desired stencil thickness. A common starting point is one or two coats on the print side followed by one or two coats on the squeegee side.

High-density and specialty printing may require additional coats. Record your coating method and use the same process consistently so exposure results remain repeatable.

Murakami and KIWO both offer professional emulsions for different inks, exposure systems, screen room conditions, and stencil requirements. The better brand or product depends on how your shop prints rather than one brand being universally better.

Water-based and discharge inks require an emulsion with strong water resistance. Not every plastisol emulsion is designed to withstand long runs with water-based products.

Look for an emulsion specifically rated for water-based or discharge printing. For demanding applications, an emulsion additive or hardener may improve stencil durability, although hardening can make reclaiming more difficult.

Many pure photopolymer and dual-cure emulsions are suitable for plastisol printing. Your choice should also account for exposure speed, screen room conditions, mesh count, required stencil thickness, and expected print run.

Pure photopolymer emulsions are generally fast exposing and arrive ready to use. Dual-cure and diazo emulsions use a sensitizer and are often selected for their durability, exposure latitude, or resistance to specific ink systems.

The right choice depends on your ink, exposure equipment, mesh count, stencil thickness, reclaim process, and production requirements.

Screen printing emulsion is a light-sensitive coating applied to screen mesh. Once dry, the coated screen is exposed to ultraviolet light through a film positive. The areas blocked by the artwork remain water-soluble and wash away, creating the open stencil through which ink is printed.
